Experts Use AI to Build Even More AI

For all the artificial intelligence (AI) that the world’s creating right now, researchers are now looking for ways to build AI using AI in an attempt to make production more cost-effective and efficient. But, that’s much easier to say than it is to do.

AutoML is one of Google AI’s various AI projects. It’s a machine-learning algorithm that’s capable of learning to build other machine-learning algorithms. Using this kind of AI technology Google can cut down its workforce massively. This project is just one of many global efforts to push forward the use of AI in the technology industry.

Most people these days are familiar with AI to some extent, whether it’s through a virtual assistant like Siri, or facial recognition systems that are in use quite often today. The problem is, there are very few people around the world that can actually understand these machines well enough to be able to build, adapt, and maintain them. And, a lot of the ones that do, are snapped up by tech giants such as Google, Facebook, and Microsoft.

So, instead, the researchers already in the field are looking to develop new AI systems that can build more AI itself. “We are following the same path that computer science has followed with every new type of technology,” said Joseph Sirosh, a vice president at Microsoft. “We are eliminating a lot of the heavy lifting.”

Jeff Dean is a researcher and one of Google’s leading engineers and he is excited about the integration of AI into society. “We want to go from thousands of organizations solving machine learning problems to millions,” he said. At the moment, Google is investing heavily in cloud-computing services that enable other businesses to build and run their own software.

Neural networks are also helping to accelerate the development of AI as they allow engineers to create algorithms in which the machine can learn all on their own how to complete specified tasks.

However, with Google’s AutoML, no engineer would be required. Instead, the AI would create a new machine learning system. Barret Zoph is one of Google’s researchers working on the project currently and he believes once they have perfected the method it can be used on other tasks too including machine translation or speech recognition.

Machine learning is just one area of AI that will change the world as we know it. “Computers are going to invent the algorithms for us, essentially,” said a Berkeley professor, Pieter Abbell. “Algorithms invented by computers can solve many, many problems very quickly – at least that is the hope.”
