The Race is on for AI But Who’s at the Top Now?

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications are emerging all around us, but have you ever stopped for a moment to think who’s running the race? Various companies have invested big money in advancing AI, but there can only be so many top players in the race. Here’s some of them:

Google: It’s of no real surprise really that Google is one of the leaders in this AI revolution. With Alphabet as its parent company, Google has been making itself known in the world of AI since around 2012 when it started investing in AI startups. In 2014 it acquired

Baidu: It’s not just the US that is looking to lead the way in AI applications. China too is making a big effort in this area and considering there are more than 730 million Chinese people online, the country has a big advantage. Already Baidu has more than 50 different AI services on offer and that collection’s getting bigger all the time.

DeepMind: Another of Alphabet’s babies, DeepMind is a powerful system that’s capable of mimicking human-level AI. It was acquired by Google back in 2014 for a tidy sum of $400 million and is now one of the most well-respected AI applications out there. The company is eager to expand the use of AI in other industries such as energy management and healthcare. Just last year it bought onboard visual start search startup Moodstock. The latest addition to Google’s AI collection startup is Indian-based Halli Labs.

Apple: Although not quite as exciting as the likes of DeepMind, Siri is Apple’s big AI achievement. This little virtual assistant gained huge popularity quite quickly when it was first released and shows no sign of slowing down yet.

Open AI: Thanks to its user-friendly approach and research tools such as Gym and Universe, Open AI is certainly on par with the likes of DeepMind in this race. And considering it’s done that all by itself from scratch with very limited resources, proves just how worthy it is of a leading position.

Facebook: The social media giant is also proving to be a strong contender in the AI race. Just earlier this year it made the headlines as two of its chatbots, Alice and Bob, began communicating with one another in their own developed language. According to unnamed sources, Facebook has tripled its investment efforts in AI in the past few years and is a trend that’s likely to continue for quite some time.
