Google Cloud AutoML Now Accessible To Beginners

AutoML is a new machine learning (ML) service launched by Google Cloud that will enable even those with very little prior knowledge of coding or artificial intelligence (AI) to use it to make their own AI tools. Using AutoML professionals can build their own custom ML models without having to have a degree in AI. The company is hoping it will entice more people to join the ever-growing field.

“Our goal was to lower the barrier of entry and make AI available to the largest possible community of developers, researchers, and businesses,” said Fei-Fei Li and Jia Li, both workers at Google Cloud AI. “We believe Cloud AutoML will make AI experts even more productive, advance new fields in AI and help less-skilled engineers build powerful AI systems they previously only dreamed of.”

AutoML users don’t need to have any prior knowledge of AI or programming. They can literally build their own custom ML algorithms without having to do any coding. “Currently, only a handful of businesses in the world have access to the talent and budgets needed to fully appreciate the advancements of ML and AI, “ said Fei-Fei Li.

“There’s a very limited number of people that can create advanced machine learning models […] While Google has offered pre-trained machine learning models via APIs that perform specific tasks, there’s still a long road ahead if we want to bring AI to everyone.”

Initially, the main service to be released is Cloud AutoML Vision. With this service, users can upload images, develop their own model, and then manage it via Google Cloud. Another program that Google Cloud AI launched previously was the Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine in 2017. This was developed in order to assist developers in building scalable ML models.

While Google does have a solid reputation when it comes to AI, whether its services will be good enough to entice users from the likes of Microsoft’s Azure or Amazon Web Services remains to be seen.

These two companies also offer pre-trained AI tools and have been around much longer. Only time will tell as to whether Google will be a strong competitor in this field or whether it should just stick to search engines.

AutoML has not yet launched to the public. However, companies that are interested can request access through Google Cloud AI.
