One of the nation’s favourite pizza providers, Dominos, has been trialling a new artificial intelligence (AI) technology that could transform the whole takeaway experience.
Dubbed Domino’s Pizza Checker, the system is just the first step towards automating quality control across all of its outlets.
The new cutting-edge technology uses a camera and AI to see how the cameras look as they emerge from the oven.
A photo will be taken off the masterpiece pizza and if it doesn’t quite make the grade with the right amount of toppings and an even spread of ingredients, there’s a good chance it will be rejected by the manager and need to be made again.
The pizza picture can also be sent the customer before delivery to ensure they’re happy with its appearance too.
Australia will be the first to see the new system with plans in place to start installing the AI across various outlets next year.
The company’s also made a deal with Dragontail Systems to start rolling the new AI technology out overseas also. Chief executive of Domino’s, Don Meij, says the Pizza Checker is a great piece of technology that will raise standards and hopefully lead to fewer customers being unhappy with their purchase or rejecting the pizza altogether.
“It will dramatically improve the quality and consistency of handmade pizzas – cooked and cut to perfection,” said Meij.
To enhance the machine’s capability, the Dragontail Systems will employ the use of Google AI software. “Dragontail is the pioneer but it has been a joint collaboration,” confirmed Meij.
“The other partner in this Google AI software which allows companies like Dragontail and Domino’s to develop products more cost-effective rather than having a machine learning from scratch.”
Dragontail Systems is an Israeli based technology group looking to automate quality control across the catering industry, starting with pizza chains.
It’s already tested it’s a system out with one stand-alone pizza firm, but Domino’s is by far the company’s largest customer.
Domino’s was originally founded in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1960 and can now be found in 85 different countries around the world.
However, it’s come a long way since then. Now using cutting edge technology at the forefront of its business, the company is in a strong position to become a world leader when it comes to integrating AI with takeaways. It’s exciting to think what could be next!
