With artificial intelligence taking over the technology space, numerous advanced products and technologies can be expected. In fact, Alimama, the digital marketing arm of Alibaba, recently launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven copywriting tool.

The newly unveiled artificial intelligence (AI) copywriter utilizes natural language processing and machine learning technologies to obtain information from millions of high-quality available samples in a bid to produce copy for products.

It does this by tapping the massive pool of content, particularly on Alibaba’s e-commerce websites such as Taobao and Tmall.

Thanks to the AI-powered copywriter, now advertisers and brands can include a link to any product page and then click the Produce Smart Copy button to view multiple copy ideas.

According to Alimama, the technology has not only passed the Turing test but it also has the power to generate 20, 000 lines of copy per second.

The digital marketing arm also added that brands utilizing the new AI-based tool including Dickies and Espirit could adjust the tone and length of their copy, for instance, dictating if they want the tone to be heartwarming, poetic, fun, promotional or functional.

The AI-powered copywriter tool is currently used approximately a million time each a day, on average, particularly by marketers and merchants on Alibaba-owned websites like Tmall and Taobao, 1688.com (Alibaba’s Chinese-language wholesale purchasing website) and Mei.com (a fashion flash sale site).

Alimama said that artificial intelligence (AI) can now cater to various copywriting needs on behalf of merchants.

It also added that the technology would transform the way copywriters work considerably. They will move from thinking one line at a time to selecting the best one out of several machine-generated choices. In turn, doing so will boost efficiency significantly.

Akin to design, copywriting entails a certain level of low-value, repetitive activities that can be made more efficient. For instance, one product may call for a maximum of 10 versions of copy for various advertising formats such as product pages, web banners, and posters among other special event pages.

Christina Lu, Alimama marketing’s general manager, said that all the content generated by the new AI-driven copywriter is the result of using deep learning models that are trained with huge volumes of human-created quality content.

Human ingenuity serves as the keystone for the tool, which cannot replace the creativity possessed by people. She also emphasized that using AI in marketing allows individuals in the field to dedicate more of the effort to more creative work.

Shaozhang Ding, Espirit’s head of e-commerce for the Asia Pacific market acknowledged that the new AI-driven copywriter tool is nothing short of amazing. According to him, the tool can cut down the tedious and repetitive copywriting work for Espirit.

The AI-powered copywriter represents the newest suite of technologies that Alimama has created to help small to medium-sized enterprises operating on Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms.

These technologies include a smart banner designer launched back in April this year, which can reformat and resize promotional site banners with a simple slide of the mouse. What’s more, Alibaba launched an AI-driven video editing tool for brands to make promotional videos in approximately 20 seconds for use on Taobao.
