The technology used by Unanimous AI is derived from a concept that is usually found in nature dubbed swarm intelligence.
In this case, the company intends to amplify human intelligence rather than supplant it using computer algorithms.
According to David Baltaxe, Unanimous AI’s chief intelligence officer, the artificial swarm intelligence refers to the process carried out by the company in merging humans with technology in a bid to form the amplified outcomes or outsets.
In fact, he stressed his point by saying that combining human intelligence with computer algorithms could result in better and more accurate outcomes.
Unanimous AI’s CEO David Baltaxe told CNBC that both zoologist and biologists have been exploring swarm intelligence, especially in systems of animals and insects for a long time. Some of the species that have been commonly used in such studies include honeybees, fish, and birds.
David Baltaxe expounded that those insects and animals are not only smarter when they work collectively but also deal with various issues that would be more complicated for them to handle individually. He also added that working together in many different cases guaranteed their survival.
In a blog post, Unanimous AI gave an illustration of how its swarm intelligence idea works whereby it convened a group of movie enthusiasts.
In turn, the company asked them to forecast the winners of the 2017 Oscars, particularly in the major award categories.
For this case, they were required to log into an online platform and use only 60 seconds to discuss and give a unanimous answer for each category agreed upon by the whole group.
When the fans worked individually, the got 54 percent of their total predictions correct on average. On the other hand, they garnered a 75 percent accuracy rate when they worked together as a group.
Baltaxe cited that Unanimous AI considers human beings to be data processors. He emphasized his point by saying that people take in more information than they consciously know.
According to Baltaxe, humans are different from machines, as they do not only work with facts and figures. Instead, they rely on other various aspects such as gut reactions, instincts, and opinions to make their choices or decisions. This case does not apply to machines.
When Unanimous AI brings humans together and integrates them with AI algorithms, they gain the ability to process information collectively. As a result, they can give out greater predictions and come up with better answers, which are more accurate and satisfactory to each person who takes part in the exercise.
For Baltaxe, amplified human intelligence could be used in many other areas including human care, legal, financial and healthcare services.
He closed his remarks by pointing out that Unanimous AI’s first commercial offerings were working with large enterprises globally to aid them with various business intelligence problems.
