ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software is the backbone behind businesses. It’s what makes them run effectively. And when cutting edge technologies are applied to ERP its clear to see how valuable they are.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has now become a big part of SAP, especially since the introduction of Leonardo Machine Learning. With this now being added to the software, the AI’s capabilities have increased tenfold. Now it can also do things like predict profit and loss, or determine the likelihood of a deal closing.

The latest version of the ERP suite to be released is SAP S/4HANA Cloud. One of the features of this upgraded software is the digital assistant, featuring a voice command interface. Another is the fact that offers an automated payment processing tool.

Christian Pederson, SAP’s Chief Product Officer, confirmed that the company is now analysing all of its business procedures to see where AI can be integrated. Some of its plans so far include adding predictive maintenance capabilities to its asset management functions.

Without decent data, AI is pretty useless. SAP has data in abundance and when used in conjunction with its HANA and Leonardo platforms, AI becomes very relevant and useful indeed. But SAP’s not the only one getting connected with AI, MapR has also just released an update.

Ankur Desai is the company’s senior product manager and he says the Extension Pack 4.1 brings vast improvements to Apache Drill. The Extension Pack adds extra support for running Python code on Spark.

While SAP and MapR are both using AI in a different way, they do all share some common features. Both bring AI to critical data-laden platforms. This takes away the need to build sub-standard machine learning models based on limited data.

Both the SAP updated version and the MapR updated version went live earlier this month and both demonstrate just how AI is making its way into all different kinds of software. This also includes applications as well as data analytic platforms.

The emergence of AI in the past decade or so has proved useful in so many ways and will continue to do so for quite some time. At the end of the day, as long as the AI application is practical and effective it will soon come into fruition. And, before you know it we’ll be surrounded in technology that looks and works like it’s from a science fiction movie.
