It is a matter of opinion of course, but every business should at least consider getting a chief artificial intelligence officer (CAIO) on board. Artificial intelligence (AI) covers a wide range of subjects including machine learning, deep learning, big data, speech recognition, and natural language processing to name just a few. In order for companies to survive in today’s world, they will need to, at some point soon, integrate AI within their business models.

Amazon may have started as a simple online book-seller, but now is now one of the world’s largest innovators in AI. Other businesses will do well to follow in the online retailer’s footsteps. Although the integration of AI may take a while to plan and implement initially, as soon as companies do it, they will start to reap the benefits.

The problem is that the world of AI is still relatively new and complex and finding the right people to set up and maintain these systems isn’t always easy. That’s where the role of the CAIO comes in. The CAIO is neither a data scientist nor a chief information officer (CIO) but is essential for any business working with AI.

CAIO’s are there to find opportunities where the business can benefit from the integration of AI. They work closely alongside the CIO and other leaders of the business. Together they can implement change within the business based on the strategy of the CAIO.

While some CIO’s may feel threatened by CAIO’s it’s really the work of both combined that’s needed to give a business the best chance at success. Also, most CIO’s don’t have time to retrain as CAIOs.

Change will almost certainly cause some disruption in the workplace; it always does. So, for that reason caution should be taken and change should be introduced gradually. But, once the AI has been fully integrated into the business model, there will be big improvements all around.

AI can have a massive impact on a business and it can take a while for everyone to adapt to these new technologies. The bottom line is there’s no getting rid of AI – it is here to stay and will eventually be what separates the winners from the losers in the world if business. The winners, of course, will be those who harness the best AI talent and put it to good use.
