Artificial intelligence has received a considerable share of hype in 2018
Currently, most companies are currently striving to acquire a portion of the digital gold rush, as was seen back during the dot-com boom.
Aside from the popularity and race to get a piece of this technology, actual innovation in the AI space is evident.
As more technologies continue to be developed, it is clear that artificial intelligence (AI) is undergoing rapid development.
That said, here are some of the most key AI developments witnessed in 2018 as follows:
1. AI-powered Medical Diagnosis
“In 2018, we saw artificial intelligence leveraged extensively in healthcare to help medical professionals accelerate and improve diagnoses by combing through mountains of data within 3D and 2D medical imagery,” said Sujai Hajela, the CEO, co-founder and president of Mist.
He pointed out several examples including:
- The advancement of “diagnostic accuracy” in imaging gadgets with Samsung Electronic’s “Ultrasound, Digital Radiology, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) concept and [their] software innovations.”
- The improvement of the rates of cancer detection in tissue by 8% with iCAD’s ProFound AI, specifically for Tomosynthesis.
- AlphaFold shows that the crossover ability of deep learning and AI could benefit human beings.
This breakthrough relating to the configuration of proteins is expected to assist those in the health sciences space in better understanding what triggers certain illnesses and come up with drugs for treating such diseases.
- Google DeepMind utilized AI in predicting protein folding, the process whereby a protein chain obtains its 3D structure and emerged the overall winner of the protein-folding contest.

2. Autonomous Vehicle
The City of Las Vegas Innovation District rolled out the first fully autonomous or self-driving electric shuttle on a public road in the United States, with a capacity of over 32,000 passengers.
Google’s Waymo also made the commercial deployment of its autonomous rides public, going beyond 10 million miles back in 2018.
3. Conversation
“At Google I/O, Sundar Pichai demonstrated Google Duplex, an AI-based system that could call local business and schedule an appointment over the phone using a natural conversation,” said Roy Raanani, the founder and CEO of Chorus.
“In most cases, humans did not even realize they were speaking to a computer.”
4. Translation
Microsoft used artificial intelligence in translating sentences found in news articles, Chinese to English, with the “same quality and accuracy as a person.”
One of the entity’s technical fellows, Xuedong Huang, said: “Hitting human parity in a machine translation task is a dream that all of us have had. We just didn’t realize we’d be able to hit it so soon.”
5. Virtual Assistants
Even though this technology has been there for a while, the number of virtual assistants increased in 2018.
“For the first time, conversational search — the process of interacting with technology and getting responses in the form of a natural conversation — serves as a conduit for contextually relevant and personalized interactions,” said Nicolas Dessaigne, the CEO and co-founder of Algolia.
According to the research drawn from the “Voice Assistant Consumer Adoption Report 2018,” the number of voice-powered digital assistant gadgets increased to more than 1 billion globally over the last two-and-a-half years.
6. Connected Supply Chain
In January 2018, Amazon released its wristbands that keep track of warehouse workers in a bid to streamline the fulfilment of factory orders.
“Amazon said that the wristbands can help employees improve time-consuming tasks such as inventory management,” Phil Friedman, who is the CEO of CGS.
“Agility and automation in smart factories can allow the factory to adapt to changes with minimal intervention. Now with workers and technology working hand-in-hand, manufacturers can monitor and adjust in real-time.”
7. Recognition
Pindrop was given the first-of-its-kind patent on using an end-to-end Deep Neural network intended for speaker recognition.
The revolutionary technology, which Pindrop refers to as Deep Voice, can passively recognize fraudulent and legitimate callers, by relying on voice only.
