AI Emerges as Top Spending Priority for Corporates

With the increased probability that artificial intelligence may take over the world or more importantly transform the technology space, more companies are doing all they can to stay ahead of such developments.

In fact, Apple’s recent recruitment of the former head of artificial intelligence and search technology at Google best displays how artificial intelligence(AI) is emerging to be a leading battleground for technology companies across the globe.

Katy Huberty, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, said in a statement to customers that machine learning and artificial intelligence have emerged as a leading spending priority for most corporate chief information officers.

The recent hiring of artificial intelligence expert John Giannandrea by Apple further reinforces her point. Katy went on to say that the recruitment serves as Apple’s way of communicating to the world that they are planning to become notable players in the artificial intelligence (AI)/ machine learning industry.

Aside from looking at Apple’s endeavors in the AI space, Katy Huberty also said that evaluations and deployment of artificial intelligence and machine learning systems have steadily grown over the past year.

What’s more, findings from a recent Morgan Stanley survey showed that about 48% of corporate chief information officers are either testing or installing machine learning and AI systems this year. The figure was an increment from the 33% recorded in April 2017.

Huberty noted that Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM held the top spot among artificial intelligence(AI) vendors in the initial quarter of the CIO survey. Specifically, Microsoft Machine Learning on Cortana and Amazon Machine Learning on Amazon Web Services tied in the CIO survey’s first position.

Both Amazon and Microsoft were each selected by 13% of all the respondents who were requested to mention artificial intelligence(AI) vendors they plan to use or are currently using. IBM Watson closely-held third place with 12% while Salesforce.com followed with 7% of the respondents.

IBM Loses its Lead in the AI Space

According to Huberty, Microsoft and Amazon have rapidly caught up with IBM after it previously held the lead position as far as the deployment and evaluation of AI is concerned. She further said that Morgan Stanley expects the market share to continue shifting amongst top AI vendors considering that the AI/machine learning market is still at its infancy stage.

The results showed that security and cloud computing were the leading priorities, followed subsequently by digital transformation initiatives.

Huberty highlighted that artificial intelligence and machine learning held sixth place in the recent survey, which was an impressive feat, judging from the fact that they were position 20 last year. The April survey by Morgan Stanley included the participation of 100 CIOs in Europe and the US.

Apple has considerably focused on artificial intelligence apps for the consumer industry. Even so, the company has partnered with IBM for enterprise and corporate applications.

According to Wall Street analysts, with the hiring of Giannandrea, Apple intends to boost Siri and channel his expertise into the company’s autonomous vehicle project. Gene Munster, the managing director of Loup Ventures, said in a blog post the recruitment would be like an adrenaline shot, mainly to Apple’s AI activities.
