AI Startup Utilizing ‘Humanistic AI’ to Revolutionise Medical Diagnosis

Artificial intelligence is working together with human diagnosticians to achieve more success when compared to what either technique can achieve independently. Here’s how Qure.ai, based in Mumbai, is supporting deep learning techniques to diagnose medical conditions and recommend treatment solutions faster.

Automation and intelligence may wipe out 50% of all available jobs within the next 10 years. The long-term effect is not yet established. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, argues that AI may have an apocalyptic future. However, the Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, terms such views as creating unnecessary negativity and fears.

Tom Gruber, a co-founder of Siri, takes a neutral position on this matter. He argues that humanistic AI (humans working together with AI), can accomplish a lot more than what either can accomplish independently. For instance, he pointed out how a human pathologist working with an artificial intelligence classifier achieved a 99.5% accuracy rate.

Quire.ai, based in Mumbai, was started in Jan. 2016. It combines the strengths of human diagnostics and machine learning. It supports deep learning techniques to assist in diagnosing diseases and recommending personalized treatment options from image data like X-rays, CT, and MRI scans. Here is a story about Qure.ai as reported in YourStory, an Indian based platform for start-ups related research reports and stories.

The Qure.AI Story
Prashant Warrier (the CEO) and Poooja Rao (the Head of Research and Development) co-founded Qure.ai. They have strong backgrounds in machine learning and medicine. Pooja is a physician and PhD holder in machine learning and neuroscience. Prashant is also a Ph.D. holder. The firm has 14 employees in total.

Pooja explained that medical imaging is facing a lot of complexity and demand. This means more workload for doctors. Hence, errors and misdiagnosis can be more prominent. Even the slightest error can lead to life-threatening issues.

Prashant and Pooja believe that a technology like deep learning can process large volumes of data and assist in detecting anomalies. This inspired them to co-found Qure.ai. They spent a year to research, develop, and train the algorithms. The technique detects any abnormalities in MRI scans and X-rays.

How Does Quire.ai Function?
Quire.ai is offered as a standalone application or integrated into existing technology. Its biggest use is in medical emergencies such as stroke and accidents. It speeds up the process of saving the life of a patient by detecting fractures and bleeds faster.
Quire.ai has already processed at least 1.5m X-rays with accuracy close to that of a human. Solutions from Qure.ai are already being used in four medical facilities across Mumbai. India is now a place that has deployed AI for real-world use.

Future Plans
An Nvidia report notes that most medical records like medical images and test reports are like a goldmine holding health information. AI comes in handy to process data and compare one patient from others and assist doctors in providing more effective treatments.
Larger companies have not been left behind. For instance, researchers from Google have also developed an algorithm for scanning the eye to detect common forms of blindness. American-based companies such as Arterys from San Francisco and Behold.ai from New York have also leveraged AI to detect diseases using radiology images. Queri.ai is now seeking to expand its operations across India and even internationally.
